Executive Director's Note
"Opera at the Carolina" is a treat for all involved - the producers and volunteers, the performers, and the audience of 5th graders, teachers, and chaperones from Guilford County. A true highlight of the Greensboro Opera season, the three-day elementary school Opera at the Carolina 'festival' is the culmination of a full year's planning.
In this our 30th Anniversary season, Greensboro Opera is delighted to announce that after the success of the 2010-11 season "Write Your Own Opera!" contest, we will host another contest in our 2011-12 season. So, tell all the 4th graders in Guilford County that you know - ready, set, write!
Emma Younts wrote the winning story, "CHICKS", that was crafted into a libretto by David Holley, Director of UNCG Opera Theatre, and set to original music by Mark Engebretson, Faculty, UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance. "CHICKS" boasted Northeast High School's Marching Band and Cheeleaders in its cast, and was a smash hit. Please read on for more highlights of this year's success and for information about Write Your Own Opera! 2011.
Sincerely, Barbara Ann Peters Greensboro Opera
