Greensboro Opera Presents
W. A. Mozart’s
The Magic Flute
November 6 - 8:00 pm
Greensboro Coliseum War Memorial Auditorium
Conducted by Valéry Ryvkin
(Sung in German with dialogue in English; supertitles in English)
Mozart’s last opera, Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute), is a Singspiel (‘singing-play’) whose music and spoken dialogue appealed to the masses, not just to the ‘elite.’ In fact, it’s a bit of a fairy-tale – with Masonic overtones – full of bizarre characters and elements of sorcery, deception, comedy, and the inevitable, challenging journey toward enlightenment and love. The Magic Flute includes virtuosic singing by the evil Queen of the Night and her rival, the principled Sarastro, comic actors, bird-catcher Papageno and his bird-bride Papagena, and the royals, Princess Pamina and Prince Tamino, who weather three trials before they are united in their love. Magic bells, and of course, a magic flute, are provided by three alluring and conniving "Ladies" for their journey; three beneficent "Spirits" thwart several near-tragedies; and three "Priests" and three "Slaves" help move the plot forward. This innovative production comes to us from El Paso Opera, whose Director, David Grabarkewitz, has rewritten the dialogue in accessible and delightfully rhyming English verse, and whose Lighting Designer, Barry Steele, has created enchanting scenery with fascinating digital light projections.
